Notice to Gamerco Residents

The water that Gamerco Water and Sanitation District provides to the Gamerco community is purchased from the City of Gallup. The City bills the District for water each month. The City also provides sanitary sewer service to the District. Wastewater from the District’s sewer lines is received by the City and piped to its municipal wastewater treatment plant. The City then charges the District for sewer service each monthly billing period. The District meters the water used by the residential and commercial customers. Each month the District takes the meter readings form each property and bills the customer for the water they have used. Customer’s monthly bills also include a charge for sewer service. The rates charged to the District customers are based upon the water and sewer rates charged to the District by the City of Gallup.
The City of Gallup and Gamerco Water and Sanitation District had an agreement for water and sewer service that expired in October of 2024. That agreement allowed the District to bill for sewer services based on 75% of the water used by the District each month. When the agreement expired, the City proposed a new agreement that would charge the District for the water at the City’s “Base Commercial Rate.” The City proposed an agreement that would charge the District for sewer service based upon the 85% of the water used by the District each month.
The GWSD Board of Directors hired an attorney to help negotiate lower water and sewer rates. The Board did this to protect the community from significant increases in their monthly bills. The negotiations with the City of Gallup have not gone as GWSD had hoped and the parties have thus far been unable to reach a new agreement. The Board is continuing to work with their attorney to fight for water rates that the community can afford. Despite ongoing negations of a new agreement, the City recently decided to start charging the District for water at a higher rate that the Base Commercial Rate that the City had proposed in the negotiation. The City has also started billing the District for sewer services based upon 100% of the water delivered each month instead of the 85% it had proposed in the negotiations.
The City’s actions will raise the cost of water and sewer services for everyone in Gamerco.
You can expect to have a larger bill for your upcoming water bills. This is unavoidable. The GWSD Board understands that this will create hardship for a large percentage of our community. Please know that this is a very important matter to the Board and they are pushing forward with the fight for affordable water.

El agua que el Distrito de Agua y Saneamiento de Gamerco suministra a la comunidad de Gamerco se compra a la ciudad de Gallup. La ciudad factura al distrito el agua cada mes. A pesar de las continuas negociaciones para alcanzar un nuevo acuerdo, la ciudad ha decidido recientemente empezar a cobrar al distrito una tarifa de agua superior a la tarifa comercial básica que había propuesto en la negociación. La ciudad también ha empezado a facturar al distrito los servicios de alcantarillado
basándose en el 100 % del agua suministrada cada mes, en lugar del 85 % que había propuesto en las negociaciones.
Las medidas de la ciudad aumentarán el coste de los servicios de agua y alcantarillado para todos los habitantes de Gamerco.
Es de esperar que las próximas facturas de agua sean más elevadas. Esto es inevitable. La Junta Directiva del GWSD es consciente de que esto supondrá una dificultad para un gran porcentaje de nuestra comunidad. Tengan por seguro que se trata de un asunto muy importante para la Junta Directiva, que sigue luchando por conseguir un precio asequible para el agua.
